MONOR. OUR TOWN. WE ARE BUILDING IT. RELIGION and social life The Reformation soon found followers in Monor and Reformed school education started in 1567. During the Turkish occupation the Reformed population fled, then returned home after the fighting ended and began to rebuild their church and school. The current Reformed Church building was rebuilt in 1702. In the 18th century, the landlord of Monor, the Chapter of Eger, started to establish a new Catholic parish. The Church of the Assumption located in the town centre was consecrated in 1806. For a long time, a small number of evangelic (Lutheran) inhabitants who moved to Monor from nearby towns belonged to the congregation of Péteri. They became independent in 1912 and their own church was consecrated in 1939. The Baptist congregation built a church of their own in 1949. The Reformed and the Catholic small churches serve the spiritual life of the residents of Újtelep. The town has had an active social life for decades. Civil organizations are also involved in developing rich programmes, including the nationwide Mulled Wine Festival in January, wine competitions, Coach Driving Competition in June, and John Blessing Day in December. 32
